gen.isis gardens · Southeast DC · Ward 8

Home is the ground everything grows from.

A living garden and gathering place in Southeast DC — and a beacon for what a single household can do with the land beneath its feet.

℞ The prescription is home

A Manifesto

The Prescription is HOME.

We were told the change would come from somewhere else. A program. A policy. A protest downtown. So we waited.

The change was under our feet the whole time.

Home is the smallest, most overlooked unit of power we have — the ground beneath us, the walls around us, the neighbors beside us. Tend that root, and the fruit takes care of itself.

Most movements fight for the fruit — cheaper food, stable housing, a fair economy — and wonder why it never lasts. gen.isis gardens tends the root. Food justice, affordable housing, economic stability, collective healing: these are not the point of the work. They are what grows when a people remember their power.

So this is beyond food justice. It is about reclaiming the power to shift humanity toward something more equitable — starting with the most radical act available to any of us: activating what we already have, from where we already stand.

The prescription is home.

The Root · the catalyst

Home · Land · Community

The cornerstone every equitable society is built on.

The Fruit · what grows

  • Food justice
  • Affordable housing
  • Economic self-sufficiency
  • Cultural preservation
  • Collective healing

Tend the root, and these follow on their own.

Why this ground

One of the last places still affordable, and still growing.

When I bought this place, food and housing were slipping out of reach for the people I love. In the whole of the Northeast, only a few corners are left that are both affordable and still growing — parts of Baltimore, and Southeast DC. We are standing in one of them.

I kept asking one question: why are we paying thirteen dollars for a bag of greens we could be growing on our own roofs?

gen.isis gardens is my answer. Not a farm to look at — a beacon. Proof of what any household can do with a twenty-by-forty patch, even without land, without money, without permission.

20 × 40

The size of an ordinary backyard. Enough to feed a family, seed a block, and model an economy that supports itself.

Specimen 02 · the markup

$13

A bag of greens at the store — grown at home for the price of a seed packet. The gap is the whole point.

ART2ACTION CommuniTea Party

Once a month we make tea, sit in the open air, and grow a community by hand. This is where it begins.

First activationSaturday, September 12, 2026 · 2:00 PM

Held during Art All Night DC (September 11–12, 2026)

ART2ACTION CommuniTea Party

We bring artists, creatives, funders, developers, and community stakeholders onto the same ground — to connect, and to answer a few real questions together: how do creatives, and the home, the block, and the community, move to the forefront of every necessary change in the world?

Conversation prompts

What would your block look like if the home were the headquarters of the movement?

What can you grow — food, art, or otherwise — in the space you already have?

If creatives led the next economy, what would it be built on?

Monthly gatherings continue through 2026.

The larger claim

What starts on one lot in Southeast DC is a model for the country: that economic stability doesn't wait for permission — it can start today. That the home sits at the center of any real movement. That a garden, tended by a household and shared across a block, becomes a connecting force strong enough to hold an economy that feeds itself.
